Belgium Diesel Prices Hit New High

(MENAFN) Belgium is bracing for record-high fuel prices starting Tuesday, a news agency reported, citing the country's Economy Ministry — the latest economy to feel the economic shockwaves of the escalating Middle East conflict.

Diesel (B7) is set to surge by 17 cents to a new peak of €2.333 per liter (approximately $2.77), while Petrol 95 (E10) will climb 5.7 cents to a maximum of €1.92 per liter (roughly $2.28). Heating oil (H0/H7) will also rise by 3.5 cents, reaching €1.4347 per liter (nearly $1.70) for orders of no less than 2,000 liters.

The price spike traces directly to mounting pressure on global energy supply chains following Iran's announcement on March 2 of sweeping navigation restrictions on the Strait of Hormuz — one of the world's most critical arteries for oil shipments. Tehran has threatened to strike any vessel attempting to transit the waterway without prior coordination.

The stakes could scarcely be higher. Approximately 20 million barrels of oil pass through the strait each day, and its effective closure has sent oil prices sharply higher, while simultaneously inflating shipping and insurance costs — triggering deepening alarm across global markets.

The crisis has its roots in the US-Israeli air offensive against Iran, launched on Feb. 28, which has so far killed more than 1,340 people, including former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Tehran has since struck back with drone and missile attacks targeting Israel, Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf states hosting American military forces — a cycle of escalation that shows no signs of slowing, and whose economic consequences are now being felt at fuel pumps across Europe.
