Belgium Tightens Alcohol Advertising Rules to Protect Youth

(MENAFN) Belgium’s federal government has moved to tighten regulations on alcohol advertising, approving an amendment on Friday that requires a new health warning—“Alcohol is harmful to health”—to appear on all alcohol-related promotions, as stated by reports.

The measures are primarily designed to shield young people from exposure to alcohol marketing. Health Minister Frank Vandenbroucke emphasized, “We want to better protect young people from the dangers of alcohol. With these measures, we are limiting minors’ exposure to alcohol marketing and preventing young people from being attracted by alcohol marketing messages.”

Under the new rules, advertising alcoholic beverages in media aimed at minors will be prohibited if at least 30% of the audience is underage. The ban also applies to influencers whose follower base consists predominantly of minors.

Additionally, the distribution of free alcohol alongside magazines, subscriptions, or other purchased products will no longer be allowed.
